Amross Court Motor Lodge is located in the heart of the beautiful city of Christchurch, New Zealand. Christchurch is the second largest city in New Zealand and is known both nationally and internationally as the “Garden City” for its many public parks and public and private gardens.

Christchurch sustained severe damage in a series of earthquakes in late 2010 and 2011. However, the city has already set out on the road to recovery from these tragic events, and was recently described by travel guide Lonely Planet (following a post-quake investigation) as still well worth a visit. Indeed, some of the new bars and other pop-up businesses that have emerged since the Christchurch earthquake are quite unlike anything else in the world.


The city remains a vibrant centre that offers great leisure and sporting facilities, a strong arts and entertainment scene, designer shopping, and a starting point for easy access to Canterbury beaches, mountains, and other stunning South Island destinations.


You can enjoy top-class drama or comedy at the newly re-housed Court Theatre, see New Zealand native birds at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve or penguins at the international Antarctic Centre, visit one of many quirky and unique food, bar or entertainment options popping up around the city, notably on Victoria Street where all the new and trendy bars are popping up, is at our door steps. Or spend some relaxing time in some of the many gardens and outdoor spaces for which the city is famed.

Hagley Park / Christchurch Botanical Gardens

The Christchurch Botanical Gardens attract over a million visitors each year. They are part of the historic precinct in the inner city, just a few minutes walk from the city centre and Amross Court Motor Lodge. The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are situated in the middle of Hagley Park.  Hagley Park has been at the heart of Christchurch since the 1850s when it was set aside for recreation and enjoyment of Christchurch residents. Today Hagley Park is the most significant central city park and offers a diverse range of entertainment and recreational facilities close to the city centre.

Renowned for its extensive area of 165 hectares (407 acres), its wide-open spaces and mature woodlands, the park is a major sporting and cultural focal point with netball courts, a golf course, soccer and rugby pitches.

 

Families come to picnic in a peaceful nook or to enjoy the children’s playground. Some people from other countries (both tourists and residents) visit this garden rich in international plants to enjoy plants that remind them of their home country.
The information centre and events in the gardens attract a wide range of people. Many English visitors enjoy the Englishness of part of the Gardens and of the adjacent Hagley Park. These are botanic gardens that have so many facets which appeal to a range of ages and cultures.

Punting


An iconic Christchurch activity not to be missed. Admire the beautiful Christchurch Botanic Gardens or the changing face of the city centre  as you go punting along the Avon River in Christchurch. The flat-bottomed boat, designed for small rivers and shallow water, is operated by a punter who uses a long pole to propel you across the water. Dressed in a traditional Edwardian costume, your punter shares informative commentary about Christchurch history and the sights you pass.

Canterbury Museum


Canterbury Museum, in Christchurch’s Cultural Precinct, is housed in a beautiful stone building that was first opened in 1870.

The Museum is world renowned for its natural and human history collections and a frequently changing programme of exhibitions and events complements the permanent displays.

Canterbury Museum is a treasure trove of riches. Our collections have engaged and delighted visitors from all over the world for more than 130 years.

Early exchanges, mainly of moa bones and bird skins, enabled the Museum’s first Director, Sir Julius von Haast, to form the basis of Canterbury Museum’s collection.

Today, the collections comprise more than 2.1 million items encompassing Antarctic expeditions, Canterbury settlement, ethnology and natural history.

Of particular interest are the outstanding Māori exhibits, a Victorian Christchurch Street  and interactive fun for the children in Discovery.

Places to eat in Christchurch CBD

Victoria Street Precinct is only a 5 minute walk away from Amross Court Motor Lodge.  It now has some of the best dining options in Christchurch as well as bar and nightclub options. Along with the Christchurch Casino there are great dining options at the following venues or just take a stroll and find something you fancy.  

Carlton Bar

Carlton Bar & Eatery is one of the best restaurants in Christchurch  with quality steak and seafood. Great food with great entertainment and live music 7 nights a week.  Carlton has a “no booking” policy so be prepared to enjoy a drink at the bar until a table is ready although you will most likely be seated within several minutes of arrival. The staff are very friendly and approachable. The setting is low key and a bit rustic which all adds to the experience.
